Panama Canal Testing Just-in-Time Transit The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has launched a trial period for its just-in-time service, which will allow vessels to arrive at the Panama Canal closer to their scheduled transit time. Participation in the trial period will focus on vessels equipped with a type A Automatic Identification System device. The new service will allow vessels to spend less time at anchor before beginning transit. The selected vessels will be notified about 96 hours before their scheduled transit of their required estimated time of arrival and tentative transit time. ACP will then use satellite automatic identification system technology to track the vessels within a range of 2,000 nautical miles before arrival and ensure that they can comply with the stipulated ETA. In order for the service to be functional for both the canal and its clients, a vessel's ETA must be as accurate as possible, and the vessel must be able to adjust its itinerary to meet the required Source: Journal of Commerce | |||||||||
