Canadian National Seeks to Force STB Decision by Dec. 31 Canadian National Railroad (CN) is petitioning the Surface Transportation Board to render a decision by Dec. 31, 2008, on the company’s bid to acquire the Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern Railroad (EJ&E). EJ&E’s owner, United States Steel Corp., has notified CN that it will not extend the Stock Purchase Agreement for the proposed sale beyond Dec. 31, 2008. The Surface Transportation Board is the federal government agency charged with overseeing railroad rate and service disputes and reviewing railroad mergers.
