House of Representatives Addresses
Highway Trust Fund Shortfall

On July 24, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an $8 billion Highway Trust Fund relief package. The trust fund, the primary vehicle for financing the nation’s interstate and highways, is projected to have a $5 to $6 billion shortfall by the end of 2009. The legislation, “The Highway Trust Fund Restoration Act,” restores $8 billion from the General Fund to the Highway Trust Fund, largely dependant on gasoline and diesel fuel taxes – specifically 18.3 cents per gallon of gasoline and 24.3 cents per gallon of diesel fuel.
