Tri-Rail to Fuel Locomotives with Biodiesel
South Florida Regional Transportation Authority’s Tri-Rail service recently announced it will begin fueling its diesel locomotive fleet with biodiesel. The agency plans to use a 99 percent blend of either soy oil or palm oil, depending on market availability. Approximately 20 percent of the system’s locomotive fleet will continue to use regular diesel in order to not void the engine manufacturer’s warranty. Tri-Rail began testing biodiesel in 2001 as an alternative fuel. Results uncovered a small loss in locomotive power, but a significant reduction in harmful emissions.
