Mexican Port Project Announced.

The Mexican federal government is proceeding with establishing bid specifications for its Punta Colonet container port and rail project. The large infrastructure project would transform a small coastal town 150 miles from San Diego into a port rivaling in size to the capacity-constrained ports at Los Angeles and Long Beach. The project is designed to route cargo from Asia through Mexico to the interior of the United States. Source: Railway Age


The port at Singapore handled the largest number of containers in 2007 at 27.9 million – followed by Shanghai at 26.15 million and Hong Kong at 23.88 million. The largest handlers of containers among U.S. ports are Los Angeles (7.2 million) and Long Beach (4.7 million). In 2007, U.S. grain was exported in 415,000 containers.
