A jetty is a structure constructed for the purpose of protecting coastlines or channels from currents or tides. Usually constructed of large rocks, boulders, or cement slabs, jetties provide greater reliability for the shipping channels utilized by the soybean and other industries. For example, the mouth of the Columbia River's jetty system – maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – was constructed to minimize navigation channel maintenance and provide safe transit between the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia River. 26 percent of U.S. soybean exports depart from terminals located along the Columbia River. |
